This week we explored different kinds of sculpture that uses more common materials: paper, wire, scissors and glue. A well known artist who makes lots of sculptures out of different odds and ends is Alexander Calder. He created an entire circus of moveable sculptures!

This is my attempt to make a neon sign in memory of my hometown. It is made out of wire. I attempted to make it 3-D but it didn't really work.

Here is a kind of "puppet" paper sculpture. The flower moves! It is made out of paper and glue and you also need a hole punch.

This is the "secret pocket" sculpture. It works kind of like a Jacob's ladder... only it is made of paper!

This sculpture is made out of paper! The blob in the middle is supposed to be a caterpillar on a leaf in the silhouette of the butterfly. Check out Peter Callesen. His sculptures are much better.

This is a pop up! Pop up cards are really fun for kids to make and they can learn a little about sculpture when you make them!
MY THOUGHTS
This was a fun lesson. I loved making all of the different "Sculptures", and it really broadened my horizons as to what sculpture could be. I always thought sculpture had to be done with metal or clay or stone, not paper and wire!
INTEGRATION
It would be really fun to talk about sculpture and then make pop up cards. Students could make cards for mothers day or christmas. And you could tie in english by having them write a friendly letter on their card or even a poem. Another fun idea, you could have students sculpt a character out of wire and then write a story about their character.
